It isn’t a solar problem. Every trade that hands over equipment has it.

Switchgear, transformers, EV chargers, generators, pumps, boilers, air handlers, fire panels. Different trades, different kit, the same moment: a unit goes in, its label is readable for one day, and whether anyone writes it down decides who pays when it fails.

EV chargers: no serial, no claim

At least one EV charger maker’s warranty process lists being unable to provide the original serial number or product identification as a reason the warranty does not apply. Its claims also ask for photos of the fault. Several makers extend the warranty when the charger is registered.

Generators and plant: registration starts the cover

Standby generator makers run warranty registration portals keyed to the unit’s serial, and use them to contact owners about safety notices. A generator nobody registered is one the manufacturer can’t reach and a claim that starts on the back foot.

Buildings: the information is now the law

In England, the rules for higher-risk buildings require accurate, accessible information about the building, known as the golden thread. To get a completion certificate, the client has to show that information has been handed over. For those buildings, equipment data at handover is no longer a courtesy. It is part of being allowed to finish.

The pattern is the same everywhere

The person who can read the label is on site for a day. The person who needs it arrives months or years later. In between, the serial lives in a phone gallery, a notebook, or nowhere. Whether you are an electrical contractor, a mechanical subcontractor, a facilities manager taking over a building, or an owner who just wants to know what is on the roof, you meet the same gap.

What Baton changes, for any trade

If it has a nameplate, Baton can record it. Your crew opens a link, types a six-digit code and photographs each plate. There’s nothing to install and no account, and it keeps shooting with no signal. You can name any equipment type on site. Two AI models read every plate, and a person checks the manufacturer, model and serial against the photo.

You get one register per job as PDF, Excel and CSV, with the photo beside every line, in your own Google Drive.

Quick answers

Is Baton only for solar?
No. Baton records any equipment with a nameplate: electrical, mechanical, HVAC, EV chargers, generators, pumps, motors, fire and building-services plant. Crews can add their own equipment types on site.
Who needs an equipment asset register at handover?
Anyone who installs equipment and anyone who takes it over: contractors, EPCs, facilities and O&M teams, and building owners. It is the record warranty claims, maintenance and audits all start from.
